Short answer
On a computer, go to drive.google.com, right-click the file and choose Download. Hold Ctrl (Windows) or Cmd (Mac) to select several files first. In the Drive app, tap More next to the file name and choose Download.
Several files arrive as a zip: downloading more than one file or a folder gives you a compressed zip file you open on your computer.
Below: the steps on a computer and a phone, saving Docs as Word or PDF, and what to check when a download fails.
How to save files from Google Drive to your device
To download files from Google Drive, select them and choose Download. The first group covers a computer, the second a phone, and the last converting Google Docs to other formats.
-
On a computer
Open drive.google.com and find the file
Go to drive.google.com and sign in. Find the file in My Drive, Shared with me or by searching at the top.
-
Right-click the file and choose Download
Right-click the file and choose Download. It saves to your computer’s Downloads folder. You cannot drag a file from Drive straight onto the desktop.
-
Select several files to download them together
Click one file, then hold Ctrl on Windows or Cmd on a Mac and click the others. Right-click any of them and choose Download. Drive packs them into a zip file, which may take a moment for many files.
-
On a phone
Tap More next to the file, then Download
In the Google Drive app, tap More (three dots) next to the file’s name and choose Download. On Android it saves to your Downloads; on iPhone, use Open in or Send a copy to save it to Files. If Data Saver is on, the option may be hidden.
-
Convert while downloading
Save a Google Doc, Sheet or Slide as Word, PDF or another format
Open the file in Docs, Sheets or Slides, select File, then Download, and pick a format: Microsoft Word (.docx), PDF Document (.pdf), PowerPoint (.pptx) and others. The converted copy downloads; the original stays in Drive.
Sending a contract to someone who does not use Google: open the Google Doc, select File, Download, PDF Document, and attach the PDF to an email. The layout stays exactly as it looks in Docs.
Download Google Docs as Word or PDF before sending them outside Google: the file then opens on any computer without a Google account.

When a Google Drive download will not start
- There is no Download option
The owner can stop people with view or comment access from downloading, printing or copying. Ask them for edit access or a copy.
- The download fails in Chrome
Drive downloads use third-party cookies. If you block them, allow them for Drive in Chrome’s settings, or try another browser.
- Drive warns the file may be harmful
Drive scans files and warns about suspicious ones. Only download it if you trust where it came from.
Which format to download Google files in
Google Docs, Sheets and Slides do not exist as files outside Google, so downloading converts them. Pick the format the other person can open.
| You have | Download as | Opens in |
|---|---|---|
| Google Doc | Word (.docx) or PDF | Word, Pages, any PDF reader |
| Google Sheet | Excel (.xlsx) or PDF | Excel, Numbers |
| Google Slides | PowerPoint (.pptx) or PDF | PowerPoint, Keynote |
| Photo or PDF you uploaded | The original file | Whatever opened it before |
Choose PDF when the layout must not change, and Word, Excel or PowerPoint when the other person needs to edit it.
Downloading versus syncing
Downloading makes a one-off copy: changes you make to it on your computer do not go back to Drive. If you want files on your computer that stay in step with Drive, the Drive for desktop app syncs them instead.
What to do after downloading
Find the file in your Downloads folder, or unzip the zip file if you downloaded several. The copy is yours to edit, attach or move.
Right-click, choose Download, and pick a format for Google files. To put files back in later, the guide to uploading files to Google Drive covers the reverse.
Downloading from Google Drive: common questions
- Why did my files download as a zip?
- Drive zips several files or a folder into one download. Open the zip on your computer to get the files out.
- Does downloading remove the file from Drive?
- No. Downloading saves a copy to your device. The file stays in Google Drive as before.
- Can I download a Google Doc as a Word file?
- Yes. Open it, select File, Download, then Microsoft Word (.docx). Other formats include PDF and plain text.
- How do I download everything in my Drive?
- Select everything and download it, or use Google Takeout for a full export of your Drive in one archive.
