How we test

How a guide is made and tested before it goes live, and how we keep it current.

Guides

Do the task first
We pick one task and someone on the team does it on a real account, on the devices the guide covers. We time it and note what happens at each step, including what goes wrong.
Write it from that run
The steps follow the order they happened, with the exact button names.
Test it on a real device
One or more of us follow the guide start to finish on a real device, and where we can, on a second platform too. Limits we cannot reproduce ourselves, such as file sizes or plan limits, are checked against the app maker’s help pages and linked at the end of the guide.
Publish it with a record
The end of the guide names who did the steps, on which device and on which day. If a guide ever goes live before it has been performed, it says so.
Keep it current
Readers add their own results in the test log. A reported change puts a note on the guide until we have checked it again, and every guide is rechecked at least once a year.

Corrections

If you find a mistake, tell us. We fix the page and record the change in the activity log.
