What makes a good username
A good username is easy to say and spell, and tells a stranger nothing useful. Real names, birth years, home towns and pet names all turn up in security questions and account recovery, so they are better kept out of it.
Pick a different username for accounts you want kept apart. The same handle on every site is the simplest way for someone to connect them all.
Common questions
- Can it check whether a username is free?
- No. Checking would mean sending your ideas to each service, and this page sends nothing. Try your favourite on the sign-up page of the service you want; if it is taken, generate more or add a number.
- Should I use the same username everywhere?
- It is convenient, but it lets anyone link your accounts together with one search. For accounts you want kept apart, such as a hobby forum and your work profile, use different usernames.
- Why not use my name or birth year?
- Both are among the first things someone tries when guessing security answers or looking you up. A username that says nothing about you gives nothing away.
- Is my keyword sent anywhere?
- No. Everything is generated on this page and nothing you type is stored or sent.
