Short answer
Install Telegram on your phone, tap Start Messaging and enter your mobile number in international format. Type the code Telegram sends by text, then add your name. The account is ready, and your contacts who use Telegram appear in your chats.
A mobile number is required: Telegram identifies accounts by phone number and does not accept landlines. A username lets people find you without it.
Below: the sign-up steps, setting a username, and the privacy settings to check on a new account.
How to sign up for Telegram, from install to first chat
To create a Telegram account, sign up on a phone with your mobile number. The first group creates the account; the second sets a username and decides who sees your number.
-
Create the account
Install Telegram and tap Start Messaging
Download Telegram from the App Store or Google Play and open it. Tap Start Messaging. Signing up happens on the phone; the computer apps sign in to an existing account.
-
Enter your mobile number in international format
Choose your country so Telegram adds the dialling code, then type your mobile number. Landline numbers do not work. Check the number before you continue, because the code goes to it.
-
Type the code Telegram sends
Telegram sends a login code, usually by text message. If you already use Telegram on another device, the code arrives there in a Telegram chat instead. Type it in, and the account is confirmed.
-
Add your name and a photo
Enter a first name, and a last name if you want one. This is what people see in chats. Add a profile photo now or later from Settings.
-
Set it up for privacy
Choose a username
Open Settings, tap your profile and set a Username. It is optional, but it lets people find and message you without your phone number. Usernames can use letters a to z, numbers 0 to 9 and underscores.
-
Decide who can see your phone number
Go to Settings, Privacy and Security, Phone Number, and choose who can see it: everybody, your contacts or nobody. You can also limit who can find you by number.
-
Add two-step verification
In Privacy and Security, open Two-Step Verification and set a password. Then a stolen text message code alone is not enough to get into your account.
Joining a club that organises on Telegram: install the app, sign up with your number, set a username such as anna_runs, and hide your phone number from everyone except your contacts. Then join the club’s group from the link they sent.
Set a username and hide your number before you join big groups: people can then reach you without ever seeing your phone number.

If the Telegram sign-up code does not arrive
- No text message arrives
Check the number and country code. If you have used Telegram on another device before, look for the code in Telegram there. Wait a few minutes before asking for a new code.
- Telegram does not accept your number
Telegram works only with mobile numbers in international format. Landlines and some virtual numbers are not accepted.
- Your contacts do not appear
Telegram needs permission to read your contacts to show who already uses it. Allow it in your phone’s settings, or add people by username instead.
What people can see on a new Telegram account
A new account shares more than many people expect, so it is worth checking the defaults in Privacy and Security.
| Setting | What it controls | Worth setting to |
|---|---|---|
| Phone Number | Who sees your number | My Contacts or Nobody |
| Who can find me by number | Who can look you up with it | My Contacts |
| Last Seen & Online | Who sees when you were last active | Your choice |
| Groups & Channels | Who can add you to groups | My Contacts |
Hide the number first: in large groups, anyone who can see it can save it and contact you elsewhere.
Username or phone number: how people find you
People who have your number saved find you automatically. Everyone else needs your username, which opens a chat with you without revealing the number. It is the safer thing to share with people you do not know well.
A username is also how your profile link works: t.me/ followed by the username opens a chat with you.
What to do after creating your Telegram account
With the account ready, a username set and the number hidden, you can join groups and channels without exposing your contact details.
Sign up with your mobile number, set a username and hide the number from people who are not your contacts. To bring your own people together, create a group and share its invite link.
Before you sign up for Telegram
- Can I use Telegram without a phone number?
- No. Telegram uses a mobile number to identify accounts. You can hide the number from other people with a username and the privacy settings.
- Is Telegram free?
- Yes. Telegram is free. Telegram Premium is an optional subscription with extra features such as larger uploads.
- Can I use Telegram on my computer?
- Yes, once the account exists. Sign in to Telegram Desktop or Telegram Web, and your cloud chats appear there too.
- Will my contacts know I joined Telegram?
- They may. People who have your number saved and use Telegram can be told you joined. Contact and privacy settings limit what they see.
