Short answer
While a video plays, select Settings (the gear) in the player, then Quality, and choose a setting. To change it for every video on your phone, tap your profile picture, then Settings and Video quality preferences, and choose separately for mobile networks and Wi-Fi.
Auto is usually right: YouTube adjusts quality to your connection and screen. Choose a higher setting only if you want sharper video and can spare the data.
Below: the steps on a phone, computer and TV, what each option does, and why HD is not always offered.
How to set the quality of YouTube videos
To change video quality on YouTube, use the player for one video or the app settings for all of them. The first group covers the video you are watching, the second your defaults.
-
For the video you are watching
Open Settings in the video player
While the video plays, tap the video on a phone, or hover over it on a computer, and select Settings, the gear icon. On a TV, select Settings in the player controls.
-
Select Quality and choose a setting
Select Quality. On a phone you see Auto, Higher picture quality, Data saver and Advanced, which lists exact resolutions such as 720p or 1080p. Choose one, and the video switches straight away.
-
For every video
Open Video quality preferences in the app
In the YouTube app, tap your profile picture, then Settings, then Video quality preferences. These are the defaults every video starts with.
-
Choose separately for mobile networks and Wi-Fi
Set one option for mobile networks and another for Wi-Fi. Data saver uses less data on mobile; Higher picture quality looks better but may take longer to start and buffer more.
-
Check the quality on a TV or computer
Defaults are set in the phone app. On a computer or TV, change the quality in the player when you need to; otherwise YouTube picks it automatically.
Watching on a train with a small data plan: set mobile networks to Data saver in Video quality preferences and leave Wi-Fi on Higher picture quality. Videos look sharp at home and use far less data on the move.
Set the defaults once for mobile data and Wi-Fi separately: you get good quality at home without burning through your data plan outside.

When YouTube will not play in the quality you want
- HD or 4K is not in the list
The video may have been uploaded in a lower quality, or your device or browser does not support the format. Quality cannot go above what was uploaded.
- The quality keeps dropping
On Auto, YouTube lowers quality when your connection slows. Choose a fixed resolution under Advanced if you would rather wait for it to buffer.
- Videos use too much mobile data
Set mobile networks to Data saver in Video quality preferences. Wi-Fi keeps its own setting.
What each YouTube quality option does
The phone app groups quality into four choices rather than a list of numbers.
| Option | What it does | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| Auto | Adjusts to your connection and screen | Almost always |
| Higher picture quality | Sharper video, more data, slower start | On Wi-Fi |
| Data saver | Lower quality, less data, faster start | On a limited mobile plan |
| Advanced | Lets you pick an exact resolution | You want a specific one |
Leave Wi-Fi on Higher picture quality and mobile networks on Data saver: it is the best balance for most phones.
Why some videos never reach HD
Quality depends on more than your setting. A video uploaded in standard definition cannot be shown in HD, small players and screens may not offer the highest options, and some devices and browsers do not support the formats YouTube uses for 1080p and 4K.
What to do after changing the quality
Once your defaults are set, you rarely need the player menu again: videos start in the quality you chose for the connection you are on.
Use Settings, then Quality, for one video, and Video quality preferences for all of them. For trips without signal, downloading videos in advance avoids streaming altogether.
YouTube video quality: what to know
- What does Auto quality do?
- It changes the quality as you watch, based on your connection speed, screen size and the quality the video was uploaded in.
- Why is a video blurry even on fast internet?
- The original upload may be low quality, or the player has not caught up yet. Choose a higher resolution under Advanced to check what is available.
- Does higher quality use more data?
- Yes. Higher picture quality uses noticeably more data than Data saver, which matters on a mobile plan.
- Can I make every video play in HD?
- You can set Higher picture quality as the default for Wi-Fi and mobile. Videos still play lower when the upload or your connection cannot support HD.
