What happens to your subscriptions when your card expires

The short version

  • An expired card does not end a subscription on the day. The next payment fails, and the store or service starts retrying.
  • Google Play can keep a subscription working for up to 30 days of grace, then holds it for up to 60 more before cancelling it.
  • Apple keeps retrying a failed subscription payment for up to 60 days, and an unpaid balance can block other purchases and downloads.
  • A failed payment is not a cancellation. If you want to stop a subscription, cancel it; do not rely on an old card running out.

The payment fails, the subscription does not end

A card with a past expiry date cannot be charged. When a subscription renews, the payment is declined, and that is where the process begins rather than ends.

Apple, Google Play and most services treat a declined payment as a problem to fix, not a decision to leave. They retry the charge, often keep the service running for a while, and send you messages asking you to update the card.

Google Play: grace, then hold

Google Play splits the time after a failed payment into two stages.

StageHow longCan you use the subscription?
Grace periodUp to 30 days, depending on the appYes, while Play retries the payment
Account holdUp to 60 daysNo, access is paused
After bothThe subscription is cancelled

The grace period can be as short as zero days for some apps, so access may pause straight away. Throughout both stages Google Play retries the payment. Add a working card in Payments & subscriptions and the subscription picks up again.

Apple: retries for up to 60 days

Apple retries a failed subscription payment for up to 60 days. In the meantime it may show a message about a billing problem with a previous purchase.

That message matters beyond the one subscription. Until the balance is paid, Apple can stop you making new purchases, downloading apps, even free ones, or using subscriptions. To fix it, open Settings, tap your name, then Payment & Shipping, add a working card and remove the expired one.

Apple does not know why a card was declined. If the card is valid and still refused, the bank is the place to ask.

The new card may update itself

Many banks pass the new expiry date of a renewed card to the companies that charge it, through the card networks’ updating services. When that happens, your subscriptions carry on as if nothing changed.

This is helpful when you want the subscriptions to continue, and a trap when you do not. A service you meant to drop can find your new card and charge it.

Expiry is not cancellation

It is tempting to let an old card run out and let the subscriptions fall away with it. It does not work reliably.

  • The service may keep retrying for weeks.
  • A renewed card may be updated automatically and charged.
  • An unpaid Apple balance can block other things on your phone.
  • Some services keep your account active with an outstanding balance.

If you want a subscription to end, cancel it where it is billed. It takes a minute, and it is the only way that is certain.

What to do when a card is about to expire

  1. List what is on the card. Your statement shows every regular charge; the App Store and Google Play list their own.
  2. Cancel what you no longer want, before the card changes.
  3. Update the card in the App Store, Google Play and each service you keep, as soon as the new card arrives.
  4. Check the first renewals after the change to confirm the payments went through.

A card change is the best moment of the year to review subscriptions, because you have to visit each one anyway.

A failed payment is a reminder, not an exit

When a card expires, subscriptions slow down rather than stop, and the stores give you weeks to fix it.

Use the expiry as a check: cancel what you do not need, update the card on what you keep. Our post on cancelling a subscription mid-month covers what happens to the time you have already paid for.

Common questions

Will my subscription stop if my card expires?
Not straight away. The payment fails and the store or service retries it for a period, during which access may continue. If no payment goes through by the end, the subscription is cancelled.
Will I be charged for the missed months once I add a new card?
You are usually charged for the current period when the payment succeeds. With Apple, an unpaid balance has to be settled before you can buy or download again, even free apps.
Is letting a card expire a good way to cancel a subscription?
No. A failed payment is not a cancellation, the service may keep retrying, and a renewed card can be updated automatically and charged again. Cancel the subscription where it is billed instead.
